New Brazil Visa Required for USA Citizens Starting on or after April 10th, 2024
Brazil, with its vibrant culture, breathtaking landscapes, and infectious energy, has always been a dream destination for many travelers. If you’re an American citizen planning to explore this South American gem starting on or after January 10th, 2024 there’s a change in visa requirements you need to be aware of. Instead of reverting back the need for Americans to visit the embassies and consulates they decided to simplify the process and implemented a new electronic visa (e-visa) system for American citizens to visit Brazil. It was previously stated that it would change starting October 1st, 2023. Here’s what you need to know.
The Visa Date Changed Again
The new the visa will be required is not April 10th, 2024. You can read more about the new decree for Brazil Visa changing the date. It seems it was changed so that it did not affect the turn out for carnival.
The Electronic Visa (e-Visa) System
The Brazilian government is introducing an e-visa system to streamline the application process, making it easier and quicker for American travelers to obtain a visa. This system eliminates the need to visit a consulate or embassy, as the entire process can be completed online from the comfort of your own home.
How to Apply for an Brazil e-Visa
Applying for an e-visa should be a straightforward process:
- Online Application: Visit the official website of the Brazilian embassy or the authorized visa application platform. Fill out the application form with your personal details, travel information, and passport data.
- Document Upload: You’ll need to upload a few documents, including a digital photo of yourself and a scanned copy of your passport’s bio-data page. There may be a background check needed if the process is like when the visa cost $160 and lasted 10 years.
- Payment: Pay the visa fee using a credit or debit card. The cost of the e-visa is significantly lower than the traditional visa. The Price is $80.90
- Receiving Your e-Visa: Once your application is approved, your e-visa will be sent directly to your email. You should print out a copy and carry it with you when you travel.
The processing time for the e-visa is typically up to five business days, so it’s recommended to apply well in advance of your planned departure date.
Important Things to Remember about getting a Brazil Visa
While the introduction of the e-visa system simplifies the process of visiting Brazil, there are a few key points to keep in mind:
- Validity: The e-visa allows American citizens to stay in Brazil for up to 90 days per year. The last time I was required to do an e-visa for Brazil it cost around $50 and the visa itself was valid for two years from the date of issue. At this time I don’t know exactly what the cost will be or how long the new visa will be valid.
- Purpose of Visit: The e-visa is intended for tourists, business travelers, artistic or sports activities, or transit purposes. It does not grant the holder the right to work or reside in Brazil.
- Passport Validity: Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date you plan to enter Brazil.
- Travel Insurance: While not mandatory, it’s advisable to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses during your stay in Brazil.
- Health Considerations: Depending on your itinerary, consider checking if any vaccinations are recommended before traveling to Brazil.
With the introduction of the e-visa system, Brazil has made it a little more difficult for American travelers that have been experiencing free on-arrival visas these last few years. Although, I understand and respect the country’s decision to return to reciprocity with other countries. I will definitely miss the ability to just show up at the airport. Even before learning Portuguese, Brazil has become my home away from home.
Whether you’re drawn to the bustling city life of Rio de Janeiro, the pristine beaches of Bahia, or the Amazon’s natural wonders, obtaining your e-visa is the first step toward your Brazilian adventure.
