Cartagena Colombia
Cartagena Colombia is Really one of my favorite cities. I love being able to go to the surrounding islands. Something about waking up early and getting on a boat to a private beach club excites me. The nightlife out there is awesome. Even though it’s the most expensive city in Colombia it is still fairly priced for tourists visiting from abroad. The nickname they are calling it is Little Miami and it does a great job living up to the name.
Cartagena, Colombia: A Jewel of the Caribbean
Cartagena, located on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, is a city that effortlessly blends history, beauty, and culture. Known for its colonial architecture, vibrant nightlife, and stunning beaches, this UNESCO World Heritage Site has become a must-visit destination for travelers worldwide.
The heart of Cartagena is its Old Town, a maze of cobbled alleys, balconied houses, and churches, all enclosed within towering 16th-century walls. The Old Town, known as ‘Ciudad Amurallada’ (Walled City), is a living testament to Cartagena’s rich colonial history. Strolling through these streets feels like stepping back in time, with every corner revealing a new piece of the city’s storied past.
One of the city’s most iconic landmarks is the Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas, a massive fortress that stands as a symbol of the city’s resilience. Built during the colonial era to fend off pirate attacks, this impressive structure offers panoramic views of the city and the sea beyond.
Beyond its historical sites, Cartagena is also known for its vibrant culture. The city is a hub of music, dance, and festivals. From the pulsating rhythms of salsa and champeta that spill from the clubs in the Getsemanà district, to the colorful spectacle of the Cartagena International Music Festival, the city is alive with cultural experiences.
Cartagena’s culinary scene is another highlight. The city is famed for its seafood, which is served in a variety of mouth-watering dishes, from ceviche to coconut rice topped with fried fish. Street food is also a must-try, with arepas de huevo (fried corn cakes filled with egg) being a local favorite.
Just a short boat ride from the city are the Rosario Islands, a group of idyllic Caribbean islands known for their white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters. Whether you’re snorkeling among vibrant coral reefs or simply lounging on the beach, these islands offer a perfect escape from the city’s hustle and bustle.
In conclusion, Cartagena is a city that enchants at every turn. With its rich history, lively culture, delicious cuisine, and stunning natural beauty, it’s a destination that captures the essence of Colombia in the most captivating way.
